When Trinity Talent nominee Harry Short couldn’t join us for Instaviews, Harry took the time to answer some questions and share his experience with Trinity College London, and what it was like preparing for his exams. Harry was celebrated as an Arts Award achiever for his Leadership and was selected as Youth Choice.
Could you introduce yourself and tell us what you currently do?
Hello, my name is Harry Short. I am 18 years old and live in Northumberland. I am currently learning British Sign Language; I hope it will lead to me teaching art to people who are deaf or have impaired hearing so they can enjoy art too.
What Trinity exam did you take, and how did you find it?
I studied for my Gold Arts Award, as I had already completed my Silver and Bronze. I wanted to continue my quest to learn about art and also it gave me an opportunity to teach art. I found it was enjoyable learning, practicing, and reflecting on my own art as well as helping the adults I was teaching. You do have to commit to a lot of hours for the Gold Arts Award, but I found the end result was worth it.
Did you have to take your exam during covid, and if so, how did you have to adapt?
Fortunately, I finished the award just before COVID, but I had to photocopy the whole portfolio to send to Trinity College London to be marked when COVID hit. I was pleased as I pushed so much to complete it before lockdown and I could not do my classes.
When did you start learning your art form, and what first drew you to it?
I have been doing my Arts Award for quite a few years now. I visited a local shop each week that was run by adults with special needs who inspired me to do some art lessons with them. I delivered the lessons as part of my Gold Arts Award; we all enjoyed the lessons and, although hard work, they loved learning new things as did I.
Who inspired you?
I have completed all of my art awards through Trinity and my Arts Award advisor Morgan was a great support and always full of great ideas to help me. It has helped me explore different art forms that I may not have considered or learned, so it expanded my art journey.
What has your time with Trinity taught you about your art form?
I have loved my Trinity journey and would recommend it to anyone. It gives you an opportunity to learn, have fun and explore a career, you never know but enjoy.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to take a Trinity exam?
Doing any Arts Award, you have to put in the hours to get the reward but most importantly enjoy it, as you might never get the chance to do it again!
Can you sum up your experience with Trinity in one word?
One word to sum up Trinity would be creative.
