Latitude is situated in the Suffolk countryside and is renowned for its diversity in arts and culture. Each year the Arts Award Youth network returns to run Discover Club and review the performances via Arts Award voice.
We had three Arts Award stations this year on site. The Arts Award Voice hub was situated in the woods of the Inbetweeners (ages 12-16) centre where our reporters were beavering away with reviews and articles for the website. Our famous Arts Award marquee was placed inside the Kidszone which was great for our advocacy work and we ran morning Discover Clubs in the Enchanted Garden inside the family campsite.
We worked in partnership with Culture Works East who were in charge of the Inbetweeners area and who were also facilitating other Arts Award levels over the weekend. It was great to be part of a festival that fully see the benefits of Arts Award and support it in being part of the provision for children and young people.
Discover Club was so successful thanks to the hard working team of Youth Network Leaders. Their energy and willingness to talk to families, artists, children, young people was fantastic and I feel that their skills in leadership, facilitation and creativity were greatly enhanced. I mentioned in my post about Elderflower Fields that Discover Club is a very flexible framework and the team were really responsive to the last minute changes, creative ideas and suggestions needed in order for us to exceed our target numbers! We had a Latitude tailor made pack which was very popular.
The Kidszone and marquee were a great base for Discover Club. We were able to invite our own artists and professionals down to run workshops with the children. This meant that the youth network could facilitate the whole process and the children were about the complete their awards within the programme we had to offer.
Of course the beauty of Discover Club meant that there was still the option of taking the Latitude Discover Club pack away with them to be filled in over the weekend. This model is growing in popularity and it is fantastic to hear all about the children's festival experiences and what they have been up to with their friends and families.
My favourite part was working alongside artists in the Kidszone. Silly Train Theatre offered a lively, energetic, very very silly performance which was packed with audience participation- perfect for Discover Arts Award! The company were so accommodating and team enjoyed finding out about them as much as the children did. Like Elderflower, we learnt that Discover Club is most effective when integrated with the other artists and performances happening onsite.
