Poppy Asher | TrinityTalent 2019

Poppy is celebrated by Trinity for Leadership in Arts Award.

Poppy was nominated by her teacher for her leadership skills demonstrated during her Bronze Arts Award. They said 'Poppy is an inspiring young person who took an active role in Mansfield Emerge Festival 2019 this April. She demonstrated resilience, ambition, determination, team work and leadership skills.'

Poppy enabled a large installation to be produced and exhibited at the festival. This piece was produced to raise awareness of climate change and specifically plastic waste. Poppy got her local community to collect plastic waste over the course of a month, this was physically used in her installation to illustrate the amount we consume over a short period of time. She collaborated with the Cantmamus choir to produce a piece of music that would go in the background of her installation in addition to whale noises to illustrate the effect of plastic waste on animal life and the environment. In addition, Poppy worked with a group of pupils across ks3 to produce a range of hand made brooches using these plastics to recycle them into wearable items that members of the public could purchase on the day of the festival for a small donation. Poppy is a passionate, talented and inspiring young person.'

In what ways would you say your Arts Award has influenced your artistic achievement, creativity, leadership or progress?

Arts Award has encouraged me to continue to develop my artistic ideas and has given me confidence to share them with others and lead others in art project.

How has participating in an Arts Award impacted your artistic skills or career development?

The opportunity to lead a team has helped me gain confidence in my own ideas and helped me understand other people’s artistic style and views. The focus of my installation has helped me to educate others on things like environmental issues in order to successfully bring my vision to life.

What's next for you?

After the Arts Award, I hope to continue developing my art and leadership skills by starting an art club for younger students. It has also inspired the confidence in me to apply for art competitions and submit my work.

What are your career aims?

I am interested in going to Art College to study Fine Art. I hope to become an illustrator for children’s books.

Have you got any advice for other young people working towards an Arts Award?

My advice for young people aiming towards Trinity Arts qualifications would be to be ambitious and to push yourself.
