Marisa Rehana Mann is an artist currently living and working in Dorset. She was born in the richly varied environment in the foothills of the Himalayas and early childhood in the war-torn regions of West Africa, this early influence can be felt in her exotic, bold use of colour and formal figurative arrangements.

Workshop details

Watch Marisa do some sketches LIVE from using photos of her allotment as inspiration. She'll then make some stencils and show how this is done, followed by a monoprint with acrylic ink on which to place the stencils and overpaint with the images. Marisa says "I find using stencils and acrylic ink quite useful in workshops as they are easy to use and manage, and are also quite helpful if people are disabled as the stencils provide an outline and speed up the process. I'm disabled myself so have found this works for me when giving workshops, although I love painting in oils for my larger pieces."

Marisa will then show her studio and how her work has developed from quite stylised oriental paintings to a more fluid approach to portraying the various subjects she paints, such as cetaceans and peatlands.

Wildlife and More 2018 Exhibition at The Gallery Upstairs Upton Country Park:

Follows as part of the work of Sustainable Art with Wildlife Trusts to show the importance of conserving peat and marshland. An Arts Council bursary was used to study the peat bogs of Cumbria with a view to more work there to encourage local people to be inspired and help volunteer with this critical resource. Then followed Workshops with the Dorset Wildlife Trust focused on Upton Heath, which has some areas of sphagnum moss and other peat liking plants and creatures. The Exhibition showed both the peat bogs and also a wide range of my other work in Wildlife subjects.

Marisa Rehana Mann is an artist currently living and working in Dorset.

Marisa Mann’s work is influenced by a unique, colourful childhood to overcome difficulties faced in later life. Born in the richly varied environment in the foothills of the Himalayas and early childhood in the war-torn regions of West Africa, this early influence can be felt in her exotic, bold use of colour and formal figurative arrangements. The works adopt simple, pared-down forms that carry the message of an Asian-African upbringing whilst continuing to be expansive, dramatic and romantic.

The sensitive, yet political nature expressed towards Marisa Mann’s subject matter can be seen as a direct result of empathy felt towards global situations from the first-hand experience of the destruction dealt out by wars and corruption, and from a later career in local Government after studies at The London School of Economics.

The current focus of Marisa Mann’s work has developed through the determination to overcome her disability and become vocal through art for humanitarian causes close to her heart. Currently working as an Artist-in-Residence with various charitable organisations across Europe, she has been involved in projects that have enabled a personal exploration and documentation of global and cultural events.
