German Market in Princes Street Gardens: Free! 10am - 10pm
An attraction that's been dragging me and my family to Edinburgh's Christmas for years. There's something special about ordering a hot chocolate and getting it in a festive porcelain mug you get to keep. As you wander through the market with your hot chocolate or mulled wine, you will see a variety of stalls ranging from crafts to hot food. So far this year Zoella and Wendy from Peter Pan have visited so now it's your turn!
St Andrew's Square Ice Rink: £5-8, Book your time slot! (Running until January 7th)
If you're feeling brave, visit St Andrew's Square (a 5 minute walk from the German Market) and glide your way around the Melville Monument this Christmas. Wheelchair users are welcome on the rink, and specialized two-blade skates are available too. Arrive early in the morning for tickets from £5, or slightly later for £8. You can book online via their website here.
Street of Light: Free! Duration: 20 minutes
While skating around the rink you may spy the street of light! Located on George Street, this beautiful light show is accompanied by synchronized music performed live by local choirs such as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra with their Junior Chorus. Running until Christmas Eve, catch this festive extravaganza while you can. The event is free, but make sure to check availability and see who's performing here!
Carousel: For adults too!
Back in Princes Street Gardens, you may notice the market is divided over three levels. The bottom level, which provides fun for young ones such as a Helter Skelter, a Christmas Tree Maze and a Santa Train Ride located right next to Waverley station! Also there's a miniature Carousel. However, if you're wanting a bit more leg room, you'll find a double-tiered Carousel located on the first level as you enter the gardens right between the Big Wheel and the Star Flyer, fun for all!
Traverse Theatre: An alternative to Panto
If you're looking to make an evening of it, visit the Traverse Theatre and browse their brochure of unconventional Christmas entertainment. If you're visiting with kids, you may be interested in Red Bridge's production of 'Black Beauty' which blends puppetry, music and storytelling into a family friendly show. It is running from the 2nd - 24th of December so go online now to book a ticket! Alternatively, for ages 14 and over, you may be interested in their showing of 'Last Christmas', which is guaranteed to warm your heart!
Edinburgh Christmas runs until January 7th and is based in and around Princes Street Gardens, tickets can be bought online, or from their box office located on the bottom level.
