At The Civic we are passionate about programming new writing and devised performances from some of the UK’s finest emerging experimental artists and companies. The Civic’s New Work Weekend supports these artists and companies, giving them a platform and our ‘stamp of approval’ as they pursue their creative journeys.

The Economy of Ecology - By Manic Chord Theatre

An urgent and provocative story about human relationships, communications and our impact on the natural world. Blending stunning visuals and imaginative storytelling, this show uncovers the power of human touch and the unexpected links between all things, questioning whether we are a touch deprived culture.

Wonders, Wonders, Wonders - By Markmark Productions

Markmark Productions’ exciting new production is a combined arts show about the untold story of Colonel Gustavus Katterfelto. Katterfelto arrived in England during the age of enlightenment and set about entertaining and ‘enlightening’ as many people as would pay to see him. His shows were a mixture of spectacle and science; of explanation and extravaganza; of comedy, conjuring, drama and wonder. He was at the forefront of making illusion and entertainment legitimate and became so famous his name appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Now though he has been almost completely forgotten, his name only kept alive by the mutterings of the magical community. Houdini himself described Katterfelto as “...a loveable vagabond.” and “... one of the most interesting characters in the history of magic.” Markmark Productions revives his life story in a comedic drama about spin, spectacle and showmanship. This new piece of theatre crosses genre involving circus, clowning, physical performance, dance and music.
