Tina Dickinson, Gold Arts Award

Hi Tina, tell us about your Arts Award experience!

Working with Carousel [a charity which supports learning-disabled people to achieve their artistic ambitions], when I first started with them in Feb 2013, they told me about Arts Award and asked if I wanted to do it. It’s a great award and good to get a qualification.

Actually, doing my Arts award is inspiring to myself that I am actually doing it! Being part of Carousel facilitating on all the film-making workshops, being part of the Oska Bright Team and running the festival, I really enjoy helping co-ordinate on the Modern Marvels event.

What projects have you been involved with at Carousel?

We made a film booth with all the films from the Modern Marvels project and event, which I was co-leader on. It toured around Brighton, Hove and Lewes so people could watch the films. We have it on the Carousel website and there was an article about it in Viva Brighton Magazine in November 2018.

What kind of portfolio have you created?

I prefer to type up things on paper and print out in books such as my folders.

What was most valuable to you personally?

Not giving up on doing the arts award – achieving my Bronze and Silver this is such an achievement to me! I am proud of myself that I haven’t given up.

What was challenging?

Silver Award was challenging because it hard to get a response back from my hero. Gold Award is challenging because all the writing and paperwork I have had to do was quite a step up for me – and I am doing it on my own with the help from Carousel’s Film and Digital Facilitator, Kitty Wallace. For my Bronze and Silver Awards, I worked in a group.

Who gave you the most help and inspiration along the way?

Julia, Lizzie and Kitty at Carousel.

What’s next for Tina Dickinson?

I would like to help other people to do their arts award, be an adviser – be a mentor to people like myself trying to do the awards. I am also currently working on a Gaming debate video for my Gold opinion piece.
