Five things to watch to get through isolation

The so-called ‘pingdemic’ has seen many of us stuck at home and isolating due to Covid-19. In recent weeks, I was asked to isolate myself for 10 days and joined the many others doing the same.

From Monsters Inc. to Grey’s anatomy, I consumed a lot of film and television during the 10 days and in this post I wanted to share some of my favourites. So, whether you're isolating like I was, or you just don’t know what to watch, here are some suggestions that may help you out!

Monsters, Inc.

A classic! This animated picture depicts the life of monster friends Sully and Mike, as they navigate through their monster world. It’s believed that children pose a threat to the monsters, and great fear is brought to the city when a child escapes from the Monsters, Inc. factory. Sully and Mike have the epic task of trying to look after the child and then return her home safely. Funny and light-hearted, this film was a brilliant watch and I would recommend it if you’ve never seen it before. You’re never too old to enjoy Monsters, Inc.!

Moulin Rouge!

Director Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! is a passionate, but tragic, love story set in the cabaret Moulin Rouge, Paris, in 1900. The style of the film is very much like Luhrmann’s other works, such as William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, in that sound effects and visuals create busy, vibrant and chaotic – in the best way – scenes. There are elements of the surreal and unnaturalistic, such as when the moon sings in the night sky, which adds to the humour and uniqueness of the film. Moulin Rouge! is a spectacular extravaganza: a celebration of the bohemian movement and of love. There are moments of comedy but also immense sadness in this film, starring Ewan McGreggor as Christian and Nicole Kidman as Satine. The film is an unforgettable watch, not to mention the amazing soundtrack that I found myself listening to for ages afterwards!

Ghosts

This 2019-20 BBC sitcom illustrates the lives of Alison and Mike Cooper as they move into an inherited house packed with ghosts. It’s brought to us by the cast of the hilarious and wonderful ‘Horrible Histories’ and so this comedy carries that same, familiar wit and charm to our screens. Each ghost brings a new era and personality, much like the different figures depicted in ‘Horrible Histories’. The concept of the programme is very funny and Ghosts is definitely worth the watch!

The Twilight Saga

Throughout the last few months, I have been gripped by the infamous Twilight novels: the intense love story between Edward and Bella, the supernatural twists and the vivid imagery. The saga is a fantasy/coming of age/romantic novel series that features supernatural elements like vampires and werewolves. It may be typical teenage reading, but it appears the series is popular for a reason and I have thoroughly enjoyed the books. Along the way, I’ve also been re-watching the films too. The entire movie saga is available on Netflix now and – although not quite as brilliant as the books (as is nearly always the case) – they are still captivating and exciting.  Author Stephanie Meyer creates a compelling world in the book saga and the films are powerful too. Starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward, you become attached to the characters of the saga, and engaged in the challenges they must overcome.

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy is a long-running hospital drama which started in 2005. It follows the lives of the surgeons at Seattle Grace Hospital and the patients they must treat. At times, I’ll admit, Grey’s Anatomy can be quite repetitive and slow, but there’s definitely something that keeps you going back for more. The love lives of the surgeons plays a big role in the story and you become invested in their relationships. As well, because there are so many seasons, you really feel like you really get to know the characters. The big, dramatic season finales are my favourite episodes as they create so much tension, unexpected twists and cliff-hangers, which make the show so addictive.
