D:Ream have a habit of soundtracking important stuff. Or, as frontman Pete Cunnah puts it more eloquently about their super smash hit ‘Things Can Only Get Better’, it ‘captured the prevailing winds of change.’ Tony Blair certainly concurred.
And the New Labour anthem (D:Ream, incidentally, had no control over that!) had a second wind – or third, or fourth – this past year, as it found another cause alongside key workers’ grateful clappers as it was belted out through the streets of Nottingham to rapturous receptions.
‘I got shivers. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing,’ he told BBC Radio Nottingham. ‘You do your thing and make a record for all the clubbers in the early 90s to dance to, and the next thing everyone's hanging out of windows singing it during a crisis. I was in tears.’
And the time is now for a D:Ream comeback, a good ten years after their last new material. An album – Open Hearts, Open Minds – drops in July, a record of dance perfection just in time for the nightclubs reopening. And if they don’t there’ll be words.
And the just-released first single – ‘Meet Me At Midnight’ - is a total anthem, a slice of raw house heaven that reminds you just how good Pete Cunnah’s voice is, in case you forgot during those heady 90s nights. You may as well add it to your summer playlist now, because this one’s a keeper.
