Kim’s Convenience
This light and funny sitcom show documents the lives of the Korean-Canadian Kim family. The series is based on Ins Choi's 2011 play of the same name and hosts a whole array of colourful, loveable characters. After the recent announcement that the show was ending, I was reminded just how much I loved watching this show: it’s silly, wholesome and definitely comforting.
Okja
I didn’t have many expectations going into this film but I was so glad I decided to watch Okja. Released in 2017, this Boon Joon-ho movie is the story of a little girl and her super pig. The first half of this movie is a beautiful fairy tale-esque look into protagonist Mija and her best friend; a ‘superpig’ named Okja. The concept is weirdly wholesome and beautiful, as we travel with Mija from the mountains of South Korea to New York. While most of this movie is an entertaining action-comedy movie, be aware that it does contain some upsetting scenes, violence and cruelty to animals.
GREY Area
Little Simz’ 2019 album, GREY Area is a great mix between hip-hop, R’n’B and jazz. Simbi Ajikawo (a.k.a Little Simz) won Best Album for GREY Area at both the Ivor Novello Awards and the NME Awards, as well as being nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her music has been praised by the likes of Ms Lauryn Hill and Kendrick Lamar and I certainly have had her music on repeat this month! My favourite ‘comfort’ song on the album had to be 101 FM, because of it’s nostalgic vibe and lofi beat.
I love this list especially Okja! Bong Joon-ho before he was a known name (in the west) makes the most beautiful story mix of "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" and "The Lorax" into a film thats just amazing.
