Women in Rock Music - my arts issue!

My Gold Arts Issue is all about the problems surrounding women (or the lack of) in rock music! Feedback would be hugely appreciated, whether it be an opposing opinion or general comments about the video - thank you :)

Women in Rock Music - my arts issue!

think of a band. got one? ok - how many of the members are women? none of them? all of them? well, think of an all-female group. maybe little mix, the spice girls or girls aloud? see the problem with this? they all just sing! where are the women playing instruments? can you think of any all-female bands in which all the instruments are played by women??

hi! I'm charlotte - a gold arts award student, and I have a problem. I love music, whether it be rock or classical, playing the kazoo or the guitar - I surround myself with musical instruments and have concerts filling up my calendar. however, the music I listen to is hugely dominated by men.

I’m a psychology nerd with a huge love for everything theatre and music! While I do my A-Levels (including theatre studies) I’m trying to make sure I stay sane by surrounding myself with arts culture I adore. I’m working towards my Gold Arts Award as well after doing Bronze and Silver, and am constantly working on a new show, either backstage or on! Such an important issue to highlight. I'm into a similar genre of music and often find myself listening to all-male bands so agree - it's time for some change! How did you find the process of researching and creating this arts debate? :)

    Hi Sienna,

Thank you so much!! It was so interesting looking into the problem as it’s always been an issue at the back of my mind, but looking into WHY there is such a lack of all-female bands is really thought-provoking, yet also annoying!

Yes! Love it, great topic, and I must admit I struggled to come up with many female artists. KT Tunstall, The Bangles (as you mentioned) 4 Non Blondes (hardly relevant nowadays) and Blondie, but they were only female led...

Really enjoyed watching your video, and would love to see more of them on the site! Can I email you?
