‘Connect with nature’ by Dr Vyankatesh Metan

On the 9th of August 2018, I went to the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath in Bengaluru, India with my family. There was an exhibition called ‘connect with nature’ displaying stunning photos by wildlife photographer, Dr Vyankatesh Metan. The exhibition’s photos showed amazing scenes of nature and wildlife.

Dr Vyankatesh Metan is the chairman of ‘V Metan Creations Private Limited’ company, a charitable trust which works in education, health and community development. He is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who developed an interest in photography over 21 years. Travelling widely through national parks and forests in and outside India, he has done extensive study on birds and their behaviour. He has been awarded membership of the National Geographic Society. His wildlife photo was also displayed at the prestigious Jahangir Art Gallery in Mumbai.

Dr Metan has a motto for life; “Sow the seed of love.” He believes only a photographer has an ability to freeze any moment forever in the camera and began freezing wonderful moments of nature. By displaying his work through exhibitions it promotes wildlife awareness and brings wider appreciation of nature to the general public.

I enjoyed this exhibition because Dr Metan caught very rare scenes of nature that were mesmerising to see. They showed the beauty of wildlife. The display also made people think about how to save endangered species such as the Bengal Tiger or the lesser known yellow nape woodpecker. It was interesting to study nature and read how much current global changes in environment are bringing change for the future. In each photograph Dr Vyankatesh Metan writes captions on nature. For example, for the photo of the Bengal Tiger he writes, “Only 2226 tigers are left in India. Save tigers; our India’s national animal.” Having visited India regularly, I have had very little opportunity to witness the wildlife displayed in the exhibition. It has shown me how much of the wildlife in India is affected due to the widespread development around the country.
