Takeover Day 2016 at Time & Tide Museum

Time & Tide Museum in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk embraced the theme of 'The World Takes Over' as they worked with children who spoke English as a second language to create & deliver an exhibition of their own.

In Great Yarmouth, the museum ran a six-week programme leading up to Takeover Day in partnership with GYROS (GYROS facilitates social and community integration of newcomers and migrants within Norfolk). This involved children and young people aged 8 - 17 years old choosing objects that they personally identified with and working with museum curators and translators to create a heritage and culture trail for visitors to follow on Takeover Day!

Once the objects were selected the group worked with an artist to design the museum trail, ensuring it was easy to follow, and could be read by the widest possible audience. After road testing the trail, the group decided flags should be made and positioned next to their objects to make navigation easier.

In the meantime, the Community Gallery was taken over by the group to curate a 'pop-up' exhibition. This exhibition (on display for a month until December 18th) showcases objects brought in from home that mean something to group members or represent their cultural background and heritage. The group worked together to decide how objects should be shown, and displayed. Iara and Xinnyusa sum up what they enjoyed most:

"It has been really fun coming to the museum after school. It has been interesting to learn new things I didn't know before."  Iara (8)

"I now feel confident to talk to new people and meet people from other countries."  Xinnyusa (17)

Thank you to Holly Morrison, Teaching Museum Trainee at Time & Tide Museum for sending us these lovely photos from their project. Enjoy!
