Gaming Hub with 11 year Old Tega

A crafts and gaming workshop led by the Orleans House Gallery. A portion of their staff are youth, which is where I met Tega.

Gaming Hub with 11 year Old Tega

Located on the mezzanine floor, the 'Gaming Hub' staff greeted a variety of craft enthusiasts, hosting a space welcome to all those with an interested in art through gaming. Upon entering the space, I was approached by Tega, a brave 11 year old who saw me loitering and prompted me to play his game.

Can you tell me your involvement at Mozilla Festival?

Well, today I'm just showing people about how you create drawings and crafts into a game.

And how did you get involved with that?

We had this guy who's from Somerset House and he's an expert, he creates games. He taught us how to make a game and we wanted to do it and then we made our own!

Have you been to Mozfest before and what was your favourite bit?

Yeah, last year. I enjoyed it. My favourite bit was seeing all the other peoples work.

Have you had a wander around yet today?

No, not yet! We're doing it later because we're only here for the morning.

Is there anything I haven't asked you that you'd like our readers to know?

Well, I'm 11 years old, that's it, and I've created a game.

How did you get involved at such a young age?

I don't know, the people just made me do it. We do this arts club and we were told we're going to create this, it was really exciting.

Has being involved with Mozfest inspired your future?

I enjoy computers and programming of course, for goodness sake, but I want to be a police officer I want to make the streets be peaceful, and make everything safe.

What advice would you give to other young people who want to get involved with technology and the arts?

It's a really fun, creative thing to do. It's half educational and half fun. All you need to do for this game workshop we're running, is create an artwork and take a picture of it, then put it into the computer. I would encourage them to get involved because you learn a lot, and you can do it if you're interested in computers or the arts, or both!

So you don't need to be a computer whizz to be able to do this?

No. It''s good for arty people because sometimes, an artist, all they do is stick with art. But it can be involved with computers as well. I think it's quite new and I've never seen anything like it.

How long does it take to create a game like yours?

First of all, you need to create the artwork. That will probably take about 2 weeks. It will probably take a whole day to put it into the game, or it could take a week. So all together about 2-3 weeks.

What's going to happen to all the artwork people are creating right now?

With all this art, we'll take it and take a picture of it all. Then we'll send it to the computer where it will be programmed into the gaming format, and we will make that into a game for them.

I look forward to playing them, Tega!
