Interview: Siobhan James talks Joseph and musical theatre

Siobhan James is a professional singer, actor and dancer who is currently playing Simeon’s Wife in the UK tour of the classic musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, as well as being second cover Narrator for the show. I was able to catch up with Siobhan to find out a little bit about what life on tour is like, as well as what it takes to be a part of such a fantastic show.

Firstly, can you tell us a little bit about what you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not travelling around?

I love to relax and be at home around family and friends. When you’re not on tour, it’s the most wholesome feeling to be back in a familiar place around people that know you well.

That’s lovely. Moving onto work, can you tell us what the audition process was like for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat?

So the auditions for Joseph consisted of multiple rounds – of partner work, dance routines, and singing for cover roles. It was very fun and even gave me a chance to get to know some people that are actually on tour with me now.

Drifting a little bit from this specific show, but what has been your favourite role you’ve ever played?

My favourite role would definitely have to be when I covered La Chocolat in Moulin Rouge. It was so much fun to play such a sexy yet powerful character that had such a presence on stage by her body language.

Going back to Joseph, what’s your favourite song from this show?

Canaan Days and Close Every Door would have to be my two favourite songs. I love the harmonies and comedic timings in Canaan Days, and Close Every Door is such a staple piece in musical theatre culture.

You play Simeon’s Wife in the musical, however you’re also second cover Narrator. How is it that you can switch effortlessly between these roles for different shows?

I actually give myself a name and give her a character profile, which I find helps me come into the character change from being a wife to being an entity in Egypt. I named her Shikra.

I love that. What does your pre-show warm-up routine look like?

It consists of warming up the body as well as my vocals, but also making sure that I eat good food and hydrate properly before the show is so important.

What’s your favourite part about being on tour?

Getting to see the most beautiful cities and exploring them. Some places feel like a mini holiday away from home.

And lastly, what advice would you give to young people hoping to launch a career in musical theatre?

I always say to people wanting to get into the industry that you should let people inspire you, but never compare yourself to them. Believe in your own gift and keep pushing to believe that your gift is always worth being on that stage alongside the people who inspire you.

That’s brilliant, thank you so much Siobhan.
