In This Climate: Change... it's up to us

Climate change. It’s a big issue that affects all of us and the majority of people want to do something to help slow it down, but it can be overwhelming.

Climate change is the shifting of weather patterns, which is causing a risk to life on Earth. Many people think of climate change and immediately think of global warming and, although this is a huge part of climate change, this is not exclusively the problem. Climate change is causing severe storms and flooding, rising oceans, heatwaves, and much more.

This is not seen at its extremes in the UK like it has been recently in places such as Florida, but it is already causing so much harm. While facing these weather extremes, there are so many people losing their lives as we are not equipped to deal with the severe threats that these types of weather pose. After a community has faced a weather extreme, the survivors are often left displaced and in poverty as their homes, belongings and food sources may have been ruined, which leaves people fearing for their life.

Climate change also has a gigantic effect on wildlife. With the rising sea levels, this is causing a lot of danger to animals in the coldest parts of our planet, who are facing extinction if things don’t change. Also, animals are being killed due to wildfires, which would not have happened without global warming. Their homes are being destroyed and with forest fires being almost inescapable, the animals are also suffering.

Climate change is a scary thought but there is still lots that can be done to slow down its impact and the harm it is causing. There are so many ways that people can do their bit without it making a huge impact on their everyday lives.

Some of the really simple changes that people can make are:

  • walking, cycling or taking public transport where possible

  • taking shorter showers

  • eating more vegetables and reducing the amount of food waste that we have

  • using renewable energy

  • making sure you are throwing away rubbish in the correct way

  • reducing the amount of waste you have

  • reusing unbroken containers rather than throwing them away and then buying new ones

  • repairing things such as clothing when you can to save throwing it out and then buying more

  • recycling properly when you do throw things out

  • supporting more local businesses that promote sustainability.

It can feel like a lot when everyone is talking about the impacts of climate change and everything it is doing to our planet but, by making small changes, you can have a big impact on slowing it down and safeguarding our homes and futures.
