This week is the annual Discover Creative Careers Week – a great initiative to open the door for young people to see what the arts have on offer for them as not just a source of entertainment, but a career. Voice Magazine is delighted to be taking part in the programme, spotlighting some of our Local Reviewer Groups and much more from our offering.
But there’s plenty to explore around Discover Creative Careers Week and opportunities available all over the UK. We’re here to point you in the right direction, whichever corner of the creative industries takes your fancy.
Nobody should ever feel as if the world of the arts is out of their reach. There are hundreds – probably thousands – of different jobs in the creative industries and any one of them could be perfect for you. There’s no reason that your passion can’t become a career. With that in mind, Discover Creative Careers Week is a perfect way to engage.
What is Discover Creative Careers Week?
The creative industries in the UK are thriving in a big way. Creative folks raised £124.6 billion for the country’s economy in 2022 while, in 2023, 7.1% of all UK filled jobs were in some corner of the creative space. Those are big numbers and yet, for many people – especially from working class backgrounds – these careers seem unattainable and a long way out of reach. That’s something we tried to discuss and address in our recent ‘Kick Some Class’ series.
We’re thrilled to say that Discover Creative Careers Week also seeks to break down those boundaries by offering free access behind the glamorous curtain of these industries. Throughout this week and beyond, there are dozens of opportunities both online and in-person to dip a toe into the water of various careers in the arts. Perhaps you’ll find the thing you were always meant to do.
For more info on the events taking place as part of Discover Creative Careers Week, check out their catalogue of online offerings and also in-person opportunities, including events across the length and breadth of the UK in places like Manchester, London, and Plymouth.
What can Voice offer you when it comes to creative careers?
Here at Voice, we offer a safe platform for young people to express their views about arts and culture as part of the Voice Community. It’s easy to join the conversation, especially if we read our detailed guide on how to post.
Alternatively, if you’re based in one of the areas where we run Local Reviewer Groups, then you have the chance to join in-person workshops with the Voice team. Our current groups are taking place in Mansfield, Stoke, and Shropshire.
You’ll leave those groups with valuable skills to embrace your creativity and start posting arts reviews on Voice. Wherever you are in the country, you can also become a Voice Reviewer, using those skills and gaining access to loads of opportunities for free tickets to theatre shows, music gigs, film screenings, and lots more.
Finally, you can join our Voice Contributor programme. This is a three-month initiative in which our editor Tom Beasley – that's me! – runs a series of workshops built around key arts journalism skills. At the conclusion of the programme, there’s a chance to earn a paid writing commission.
