A Good Storyline Makes a Theatre Show.

In short, yes I do believe a good storyline makes a theatre show. It keeps the attention of everyone who is part of the show and the audience. When I go to a theatre show I am  captivated by the storyline. If it’s a show I don’t know or haven’t seen before, I find myself asking ‘what will happen next…’ or ‘how will they resolve it…’ A strong storyline keeps me engaged with the performers.

Playwrights, directors, and many actors agree that storyline is important. When the story flows from the introduction, into rising action, a climax and on into resolution, I feel a sense of satisfaction that I can trace a beginning, middle and an ending. I really like to see actors developing authentic characters. Watching them change and becoming familiar with their personalities is made much easier for me when the storyline flows. This is true of fantasy characters as well as true to life’ characters. Fantasy characters have to be authentic - for instance, ‘is that Hobbit behaving like a Hobbit?’

Audiences seem to be divided but most will agree that a storyline is important and does make a theatre show, As it is discussed in the two written pieces about audience, they do discuss the importance of good storyline but they also write that individual persons in an audience either go to the theatre show for different reasons, so they will get different results in responses.

In conclusion, I still believe a good storyline makes a good theatre show but I do understand and see the importance of the other elements of the show that make meaningful, impactful, memorable and emotional responses to a theatre show.
