How to: Start a music blog

If you've ever wanted to start writing about music or even become a music journalist one day then starting a music blog is an excellent way to take your first steps. In this helpful guide we’ll cover everything from setting up a website to gaining contacts. As someone who started their career as a music blogger there’s nothing I love more than encouraging others to do the same! So let's get into my top pieces of advice.

You don't need to spend loads of money on a website!

There are loads of free templates on sites like Wordpress or Wix, meaning that you really don't need to spend any money on your new hobby other than the cost of an internet connection. Make your new website reflect who you are by using free customisation tools and even creating a logo on apps such as PicsArt and Canva. Of course you can invest money in better templates and even a custom domain (website address) but this really isn't necessary when starting out. Also if you feel internet connection may be a problem for you, visiting a local library and using their facilities is also a good option as this is usually free.

Write about the things you like – not what you don’t

Considering your not being paid, writing about the music you enjoy is generally the best way to go. Plus showing your passion and positivity about something is definitely going to gain you a better audience. After all, who wants to read negativity when chances are they're reading your blog as a form of escapism. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to have a house style or even know what you're doing, this will come. Making sure you’re enjoying it and exploring new music is the most important thing.

Set a schedule

Having a schedule is a great way to keep track of what you're writing and encourage you to keep going. As well as this, it's a great way to remind readers of when you’ll upload, helping you to gain a following. Remember though, whilst gaining a following can be exciting it shouldn't be the reason you write. You can also write things in advance and schedule them to go live on your blog when it suits!

Share your work on social media

Sharing your work on social media is a great way to gain more readers and connect with others in the music industry. Being able to connect with other music bloggers and PR companies is vital for finding new music to review, but also to make more friends! The more people know about you and your work, the more likely they are to mention you to others – meaning you may even gain more opportunities.

Try new things

Your blog is your own space. This means it's the perfect way to try new things without fear of judgment. Never interviewed someone before? Reach out to a few PR companies and see if any artists are available for interviews. Want to start a written series such as New Music Friday? Just give it a go and if it doesn’t work for you then you don’t need to do it again.
