"Racing, redefined"

Formula Fusion @ EGX Rezzed

Built on the Unreal Engine, Formula Fusion hopes to provide "the future of anti gravity racing, F-1 in the future." Sound like Wipeout or F-Zero? That's no accident

Andrew Walker is the creative director and founder of R8 Games. His impressive game resumé includes Worms, Lemmings, and, most importantly, Wipeout 3.

However, the team at R8 are looking to "redefine" racing, and while you could view Formula Fusion as the spiritual successor to Wipeout, they hope to advance the ideas and mechanics, then hopefully, exist in the same space while pushing away from the comparison.

And there is plenty to differentiate themselves. We spoke through some of the planned features, including a garage system akin to that of Midnight Club - another game Andrew worked on. Additionally, they are working on a "big robust multiplayer system," that will eventually lead to tournaments, dedicated servers and Elo ranking.

The game was funded on Kickstarter and then published on Steam Early Access. Although Andrew espouses the benefits of publishing games this way (eg. QA testing is done through the community) he acknowledges that the team did make some mistakes in their approach to early access. They didn't release iterative updates for the community, deciding that doing so would detract time from development. Andrew did however promise that a big update will be available soon for the community.

Speaking of the community, Andrew said they were fantastic and very active. He said the company likes to respond to comments, and view themselves as very accessible. They are soon to begin hiring for community manager roles and intend to select them from their existing community rather than go down the route of hiring the traditional way with a job interview.

When the game does launch, it doesn't mean that it isn't still a beta. Andrew explained that the first release will be v1.0, and then continue to be a "rolling beta for a very long time" as they will constantly be delivering updates and new content for players.

R8 Games are aiming for a Q2 release, with no set in stone date. There are plans to publish on consoles down the line, with work on XBox One and PS4 already happening. I was delighted to hear that they are currently hitting 60fps on consoles. Again, no firm date for release was announced.
