16-year-old Niamh was nominated for TrinityTalent for her achievements in singing. She achieved her Grade 8 Vocals, working with her teacher, Donna Povey.
Niamh's singing teacher, Donna Povey nominated her, saying: "Niamh has shown such strength and leadership this year. Having taken Trinity College London Musical Theatre exams up to and including Grade 7, she decided that for her Grade 8 the Rock & Pop syllabus was much more in line with her true self as a performer. To convert to the different syllabus, she gained as much experience as possible performing in the pop style: singing for school, singing in the local community and singing on Facebook for friends and family once the Covid crisis put paid to other performance opportunities. Niamh has built up over 2,700 followers on Instagram because she is a natural leader and other young people look up to her. She is a true artist."
Trinity judges agreed, selecting Niamh for a special mention, saying: "Niamh has taken control of her musical journey, and appears to have built her confidence and found her true self by embracing Rock & Pop."
How would you say your Trinity qualification has influenced your artistic achievement and progress with your art?
Doing Grade 8 Rock & Pop gave me the motivation and drive to work towards becoming the best artist and performer I can be, by changing the modern-day artist into my own individual style. As I believe in today’s day and age artistic form shouldn’t have a certain mould of what music should be. We should be free to create new styles.
Has taking part in a Trinity qualification helped you develop your artistic skills or career?
Doing my Trinity qualification helped me to develop my confidence and come to terms with my mental health and how to deal with everyday life. I have been able to find myself as a performer by trying out different styles with my looks and vocals. This has helped me to find myself as a true performer.
Please tell us how you found the experience of recording a digital submission for music
Personally, I didn’t enjoy doing my exam over video as I enjoy talking to the examiner. I also feel like the performance of my vocals are better in person as the quality of my high and low notes can’t be heard as well on video.
Would you like to tell us anything about the challenges you’ve faced this year, and how you’ve overcome them to achieve your qualification?
Over the past year, I have overcome being bullied at school and have learned to deal with the mental health issues I've experienced in my teenage years. Tackling these challenges has pushed me to become the best artist I can be to achieve my grades. I believe this has helped me to promote mental health awareness and the idea of 'it’s okay not to be okay' throughout my music. Because of my own experiences, I believe I can inspire others to achieve their dreams and I want to do that.
What are the next steps for you following your qualification?
My next steps will be to do more gigs around the town I live in when Covid-19 allows. I want to begin to record my own music and work towards creating an album.
What are your career aims?
My career aims are to become an artist to who many people can relate. I want to be the real raw me. To show off my imperfections, my scars because I want people to know they are not alone. This is so important to create my career around music as I believe if people are able to relate to you, your music will speak a million more words.
Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Trinity qualification or Arts Award?
To any young people who are working towards Trinity exams, do it!! It will help you change your life! It’s helped me gain confidence and find my inner artist. This experience will stick with me all the way through my career.
