15-year-old Alice was nominated for TrinityTalent 2002 for her artistic achievement in Classical and Jazz. She completed her Classical and Jazz assessment digitally due to Covid-19, and attained Grade 8 Distinction in piano.
Alice was nominated by Cordelia Ashwanden, her private music teacher. Cordelia said: "Alice achieved distinction in Grade 8 Piano in August after receiving piano lessons via Whatsapp – almost six months of virtual teaching. In July she came 2nd in a very prestigious competition at Wycombe High School for Girls playing a Grade 8 piece Erotik by Grieg. She decided to use her talents playing the piano and harp to collect money for charity. With minimal technical support from her parents, she organised a concert for friends and colleagues which she advertised on Facebook. She constructed her own programme playing her piano and harp, and it was extremely successful – she raised £1959 for a Health centre in Tanzania."
The Trinity judges said: "Although nominated for Artistic Achievement, we feel that Alice has clearly demonstrated strong leadership through her organisation of a charity concert, constructing her own programme and connecting people through her practice and deserved recognition for this."
How has your Trinity qualification influenced your artistic achievement with your art?
I continued to develop my YouTube channel and have gained more subscribers. It has given me more confidence to work on my diploma.
Has taking part in a Trinity qualification helped you to develop wider skills?
Learning pieces beyond my exam has increased my creativity. Doing exams with trinity has increased my skills and progress with even better results.
Please tell us how you found the experience of recording a digital submission for music
It was time-consuming and very stressful at the time to work on the technology, however, I was very glad for the opportunity to perform and get feedback which was very helpful and constructive.
Would you like to tell us anything about your personal circumstances or challenges you’ve faced this year, and how you’ve overcome them to achieve your Trinity qualification?
Lockdown has been very hard for all of us, and online lessons are significantly harder than in-person ones. However, I didn’t want to give up on music and wanted to spread the joy of music to other people like my grandparents, and people on YouTube.
What are the next steps for you following your qualification?
I am working for my GCSEs, and I am also working towards my Diploma in piano. Additionally, I am further developing my skills in voice and harp – I am actually working towards my Grade 7 in the harp.
What are your career aims?
To become a professional musician.
Have you got any advice for other young people working towards a Trinity qualification or Arts Award?
Always keep going and practise hard. Just enjoy playing the music and not the results as that is why you are doing it.
