Powerful romantic drama, Carol, leads the nominations with five including Best Drama Film and two Best Actress noms. Also a lot of love for Alicia Vikander who is up for both Best Drama Actress and Best Supporting Actress for The Danish Girl and Ex Machina respectively. Surprise noms come for Mad Max: Fury Road for Best Drama Film and Best Director where action films are rarely recognised. Notable absences are of Black Mass', Spotlight's, and The Hateful Eight's casts which have one nod between them. Over in TV, lots of love for Fargo and Netflix newbies Mr. Robot and Narcos. Also a great year for brits with Vikander, Eddie Redmayne, Helen Mirren, Idris Elba and Maggie Smith being among the nominees. Surprising what series the Globes have called comedies, too…here's to getting Fey and Poehler back on our screens again.
The Big Short about the financial crisis, The Revenant about an early-American explorer left for dead seeking revenge, and Steve Jobs the biopic about the Apple founder are all up for four nods including Best Picture.
This year's nominations announcement comes a day after the release of the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) awards which recognise the performance prowess of film and TV. Both are used as strong indicators as to the nominations and eventual winners of the Oscars so it's interesting to see how the two compare. Whereas SAG showed major love to awards season frontrunners Spotlight and Room (both yet to be released over here) the Globes snubbed them majorly with only five noms between them - both for Room. SAG gave two nominations to Helen Mirren for Leading Actress in Woman in Gold and Supporting Actress in Trumbo and one to Alicia Vikander whereas the Globes gave Mirren one for Trumbo and two to Vikander.
Another major snub by the Globes for Black Mass. They are historic fans of Johnny Depp but even his heavily anticipated role as Whitey Bulger didn't win them over. Over in TV the same can be seen - historic fans of The Big Bang Theory and yet not one nomination. Something else to sniff at is their categorisation - sci-fi thriller, The Martian is up for Best Comedy or Musical, whereas Mad Max is up for Best Drama…at the same time Orange Is The New Black is a comedy.
