This year the Arts Award Youth Network supported the achievement of 18 Discover Arts Awards onsite at Elderflower!
Elderflower Fields is a vibrant, family orientated festival which offers a staggering amount of performances, sports and creative activities for all who attended. Elderflower Fields is based in East Sussex and is committed to enhancing the festival experience through offering Arts Award alongside their 'Arts Camp' which is run by artist Sarah Strachan. This is a jam- packed programme of workshops including story telling, hand craft, painting, mask making and lots of participatory live art work that children can be part of.
The Arts Award Voice marquee was beautifully situated right next to Arts Camp making our job of advocacy a dream! The team of myself, Jo and Elspeth found that the children and their families were really interested in the award and absolutely loved how there was something available to be achieved alongside having so much fun!
One of the best qualities of the Arts Award Youth Network is our ability to think on our feet- Discover Club is a very flexible model and it soon became clear that each festival is unique and therefore we have to adapt it. I personally love being challenged in this way and the team were excellent in getting to know the festival participants and talking them through how the children could achieve their award.
It worked best with this system- registering interest and children before they went inside the Arts Camp, observing them taking part and getting creative, catching up with them after their workshops, going through their packs, completing the Adviser responsibilities and then sending them off to enjoy the rest of the festival.
Most of the children completed their award with us there during their workshops but some also wanted to take their packs away and document their entire festival weekend- great! It is always such an energy boost when they come back on the last day and shared their experiences with the Advisers.
The team worked so hard throughout the weekend. Discover Club fluctuates between moments of quiet and then busy busy busy! Achieving 18 Arts Award is a real success and we are so grateful to Sarah for all her support.
