Batik Art Exhibition-Fatimah Zahra Kennedy

My name is Fatimah-Zahra Kennedy and I am exhibiting my artwork for the Silver Arts Award. For this award, my art group had to choose a challenge to learn a new art form so we collectively chose to explore Batik.

Batik is an ancient art form that is becoming very popular and well known amongst contemporary artists all around the world. For centuries, many countries across the globe practiced the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye.

My exhibition will highlight my journey in achieving my art challenge which was to create a Batik Scarf and Jacket.

Catalogue of Artwork:

Exhibit 1, 2 & 3:

Before I officially started the award, my peers and I tried various art forms to explore our strengths and weaknesses.  I created two embroidery hoops inspired by Vera Shimunia and a 3D abstract landscape using acrylic paints on canvas.

Exhibit 4:  This is a silk painting that I created at a workshop which was led by an artist and practitioner. I used gutta and silk paints on silk.

Exhibit 5:  Practice Batik 1- My first attempt at batik, a hibiscus flower painted with silk paints on silk.

Exhibit 6:  Practice Batik 2 - I took inspiration from traditional Islamic geometric art, painted on silk with silk paints.

Exhibit 7:   Practice Batik 3 - This was my second geometric pattern to show progression. Again, painted on silk with silk paints.

Exhibit 8:  Practice Batik 4- Abstract waves on cotton, painted with fabric paints and glitter.

Exhibit 9:  Practice Batik 5- Abstract peacock feather on cotton, painted with metallic fabric paints and beads.

Exhibit 10:  Final Practice Batik 6- Rose on miniature silk hoop, painted with silk paints.

Exhibit 11:  This batik was created following an online tutorial. Painted on cotton, using fabric paints.

Exhibit 12:  Artist Inspiration- I chose Pearls of Islam to base my research on and created artwork similar to that of their album cover but using batik. Painted on cotton, fabric paints, and embroidery.

Exhibit 13:  Batik on Scarf, my art challenge. Mixed media, silk scarf, silk, and metallic fabric paints with diamantes.

Exhibit 14:  Batik on Jacket, my art challenge. Mixed media on chiffon, metallic paints, diamante, and beads.

I really enjoyed your exhibition Fatimah, the pieces are all intricate and detailed, my favourite piece is the jacket, the colours you have used for the peacock feather really makes it stand out. I also like the scarf, the geometric mosaics are beautiful and the colours are bright and vibrant. both pieces display the careful use of batik. I also really like the artist inspired piece the colours and details used give a beautiful and vivid effect.
