What to expect in the first term
Let’s get serious about sustainable fashion through either experimental design or simply sewing something for yourself. Illustration, designing, pattern cutting and advanced sewing – whatever is your thing. We are here to promote confident young creatives with open enquiring minds who want to make a change. Many schools are abandoning textiles as part of the government directive so in light of this we have become what’s called an Arts Award centre and able to help you gain a GCSE level in something you love doing – fashion. Why an Arts Award? Perfect for beginners onwards.

Activities include:

  • Discussion of current fashion trends, news, exhibitions, ethics and sustainability, and how this affects your subsequent work and design
  • Understanding the importance of research.
  • Mini sketchbook design projects
  • Fashion illustration
  • Awareness and technique
  • Draping experimental shapes on mannequin stand
  • Sewing techniques
  • How to upcycle and repair fashion you already have
  • At the end of your first term you will come home with:
  • A sketchbook full of fashion research, fabric  sustainability awareness, illustrations and design development
  • Technical sewing samples to put in a file
  • A finished garment
  • Upcycled fashion garment

We develop your skills in:

  • Research
  • Design awareness
  • Communication
  • Illustration/drawing
  • Moodboards
  • Pattern cutting
  • Garment construction
  • Fabric knowledge
  • Pinning, measuring and cutting
  • Machine and hand sewing
  • Specialist sewing skills
  • Zip and fastening insertion
  • Hand and machine embroidery
  • Current fashion industry knowledge
