The work of actors is pretty central to the work we make in theatres. Every director has to work closely with actors. And it can be a lot harder than we like to admit. There often seems to a kind of consensus that develops around what constitutes "good acting." But looking back at the history of acting, it's obvious that this consensus has shifted hugely with time. And, whilst we know and accept that there are different kinds of design, and different kinds of plays, we're perhaps not as happy to say the same about acting.

Using the script of In The Night Time (Before the Sun Rises) as well as other stimuli, films and plays and anything we find interesting, Ben Kidd leads an investigation into acting, what it means, how a director can help to liberate actors, and whether different types of work demand different kinds of acting.

Ben Kidd's recent directing credits include Chekhov's First Play (Dead Centre / Dublin Theatre Festival), Spring Awakening (Headlong), LIPPY (Dead Centre / Traverse / Young Vic). He is co-founder and joint artistic director of Dead Centre and was the inaugural winner of the Genesis Future Director Award at the Young Vic in 2012.
