Director of Caligula and the Sea, Yuxuan Liu will join us for Instaviews on Wednesday 15 February at 13:00.
Caligula and the Sea is a fantastical, dramatic, gripping, and not-so-historically-accurate retelling of the tales of the infamous young Roman emperor, Caligula. This new devised play examines themes of power, friendship, masculinity, and the environment.
Caligula and the Sea is one the VAULT FIVE shows heading to the festival from February 28 - March 5, 2023.
Yuxuan Liu, the director and lead artist of Caligula and the Sea, is one of this year’s VAULT Five artists. The VAULT Five is VAULT Festival’s yearly 9-month mentoring programme for early and mid-career live performance makers with Alumni including Tabby Lamb, Casey Bailey, Gemma Barnett, Katie Greenall, and Julene Robinson. About the creation of Caligula and the Sea, Yuxuan says: “Even though this play is set in a fictional and fantastical world, it says something universal and timeless about human nature. I think the audience will see a bit of themselves and the world we live in when they watch it. We will be telling this story through text, movement, music, and puppetry - it’s going to be an entertaining show to watch.”
As a versatile theatre-maker and deviser, Yuxuan’s work ranges from children's theatre and new writing to the reimagining of classic plays. He recently directed the sold-out new queer comedy BoyBi at the Bread & Roses Theatre as part of Clapham Fringe 2022.
Caligula and the Sea’s cast includes Noah Silverstone (Where The Magic Happens – JOY Festival, Lyric Hammersmith) as Caligula, Felix Ryder (Cyclops and Home Burial - international tours) as Cassius Chaerea, and Riko Nakazono (My Neighbour Totoro – Royal Shakespeare Company; Madam Butterfly – English National Opera) as Neptune.
