From 7-9 May, Manchester will play host to some of the world’s most acclaimed photographers for the Photo North Festival.

Bonded Warehouse will serve as the perfect venue for a three-day celebration of all things photography, alongside photo walks, screenings, book/zine stalls, portfolio reviews, workshops and not to mention - a bar and networking opportunity.

Curators Peter Dench and Sharon Price have outdone themselves this year and secured the likes of Tom Stoddart, Carolyn Mendelsohn, Chris Floyd and David Collyer.

“We recognise people are passionate about photography. Photo North Festival aims to introduce or advance understanding of the medium through our programme of exhibitions - to inspire and engage debate. We have one perfect venue, with headline events and renowned photographers confirmed and the list growing. The creativity in planning the festival format, workshops and seminars is something unique to offer people in the north of England and beyond.”

Peter Dench (Co-Founder & Curator)

Tom Stoddart sadly passed away last year but his legacy will certainly not be forgotten at Photo North. The festival will be displaying images from his last book which showcased women in times of hardship; ‘Extraordinary Women, Images Of Courage, Endurance And Defiance.’

The View Magazine’s ‘Someone’s Daughter’ project will also be making an appearance at the festival, shining light on how women have been affected by the criminal justice system whether that be as either prisoners, activists or professionals.

Carolyn Mendelsohn helmed ‘Through Our Lens’ will be displaying photography by young people across Bradford, showcasing the images which they captured during the first lockdown in response to COVID back in 2020.

David Collyer - The Royal Photographic Society’s Documentary Photographer Of The Year (2021), documented the lives of the staff at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny, and COVID-19 gripped Britain two years ago.

Chris Floyd shadowed ‘The Verve’ during the band’s frankly meteoric rise between 1996 and 1997, offering a unique insight into their recording, touring and promotional process in the kind of detail that was previously unprecedented.

The winners of our student competition will be announced and on full display, focusing on the theme of ‘Identity’.

”We’ve chosen thought-provoking works that provide relevant social commentary on some quite hard-hitting issues and the enduring problem of homelessness. But we also have the beautiful and the poignant, that will appeal not only to enthusiasts seeking to be challenged, but also to those seeking a feast for the senses.”

Sharon Price (Co-Founder & Curator)

Photo North Festival will no doubt be one of the most exciting and engaging shows in the entire country. That’s not a prediction, it’s a spoiler.

Sharon and Peter have secured what can only be described as an outstanding line-up for the festival. Whether you’re a professional photographer, budding amateur or enthusiast, do get yourself down to Photo North Festival.
