On an overcast Saturday in Great Yarmouth, a group of young people had come to attend the National Saturday Art & Design Club.
Olivia Rodgers, 13, was one such young person, and today was a special day as she was receiving her Bronze Arts Awardcertificate. She kindly took some time to talk me through her portfolio.
All the young people who attend the Saturday Art & Design Club are given an artists sketchbook, which serves as their portfolio for Bronze Arts Award - that every child gets the opportunity to complete.
For her part A, Olivia had developed different drawing techniques, such as wrong-handed and blind drawing. Her portfolio displayed her attempts, and to look at the sketches, you wouldn’t think they were wrong-handed. The teddy bear in particular was very impressive.
Her part B documented her trip to London with the club, where they visited Central Saint Martins and the Tate Modern. The visit to CSM was particularly enlightening, as the group learned more about what National Saturday Club is, what it does, and what different groups across the country get up to.
Olivia chose the textile artist Michael Brennand Wood for her arts inspiration (Part C). She researched his work, looking at examples of the creations he had made, before completing her own weaving.
Her part D (skill sharing) was a very low-key affair. Olivia invited one of her friends over to her house, and taught her about mark making with ink. The two then had a go at creating their own ink works and revealed to each other what they created at the end, before giving feedback.
