Best of the fringe: discovering Edinburgh

August in Edinburgh is a wonderful amalgamation of entertainment, arts and culture. However, it isn't all about stand-up - check out our guide for things to do at Edinburgh Fringe that goes beyond the shows schedule.

Walk the Royal Mile

Wandering this historic street in Edinburgh will give you a great sense of the fringe as a whole - from street performers to flyerers in full costume, it is a wonderful and vibrant display of the talent at the Fringe.

Visit Museums and Galleries

The Fringe Festival is only one of the arts and culture events available through August in the city: visit the local galleries for the Edinburgh International Art Festival, or see what is on offer at the city's many museums, including Museums at Night among other fun events.

Go on a walking tour

There are loads of ways to experience the city without the risk of getting lost. For a more official experience go on one of the city's many walking tours. Bookworms can try the Book Lovers' tour, or the Pottertrail for wannabe wizards. This year the Fringe is even offering up some exploratory fun with Silent Disco walking tours, and a 'Secrets of the Fringe' guide. If you are feeling up to it there are also plenty of Ghost walks so there really is something for everyone.

Check out local cafes

The street food stalls are convenient but very expensive, so why not try out some local cafes instead? Edinburgh has such a great range of independent tea rooms, coffee houses and fast food. So many places cater for different types of food and different dietary requirements too. Some of my personal favourites were Hula Juice Bar and Mary's Milk Bar for ice cream!

Be a tourist

You know that saying: 'Can't see the wood for the trees'? Well don't miss the best of Edinburgh because you are too busy at the Fringe! Make time to see the castle, explore Greyfriars Kirkyard cemetery, hike up Arthur's seat or sit in one of the city's many beautiful green spaces - from Princes Street Gardens to Holdyrood Park.

Whatever you choose to do while you're in Edinburgh this August, make sure you make the most of your time in this wonderful city.
