Some of you may have noticed that there’s another video up on my YouTube channel. It’s my very own reworking of the amazing Dua Lipa song, ‘Physical’ (from her amazing album, Future Nostalgia). Here’s a list of some of my favourite cover versions of songs that I love, and why I love them!
Baltimore by Lianna La Havas. Not that the original isn’t anything other than a completely perfect song - but Lianna is one of the best musicians around right now and I’m so glad that she put such a unique spin on this Nina Simone classic! The rhythms in this are amazing and it completely changes the song. There’s a cover of Radiohead’s Weird Fishes on her new album too which is also amazing - the woman can do reworks!
I Heard It Through the Grapevine by The Slits. A piece of punk history - this cover is better than it has any right to be, given how much help The Slits needed to even tune their own guitars! This Marvin Gaye classic gets a leftfield disco treatment, and Ari Up’s vocals are at her best on this track.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night? By Nirvana. A traditional blues song, you’d be hard pressed to find a more iconic version than the one Nirvana performed live and unplugged for their famous MTV set. It’s raw and powerful and is full of the emotion which Kurt Cobain brought to every live performance. Iconic!
Friday I’m In Love by Phoebe Bridgers. The indie princess takes on goth staple The Cure’s Friday I’m in Love - and nails it! She’s such an incredible songwriter, who really manages to put so much emotion and pining into everything that she sings, and this was the perfect song for her to cover.
Seven Nation Army by Postmodern Jukebox. No list of covers would be complete without a classic PMJ tune! This is one of my favourites, with the vocals sounding so incredible and so different to the original! It’s sultry and full of attitude - just perfection!
I hope you guys enjoyed my list of some of my favourite covers - and if you haven’t watched my version of ‘Physical’ yet, you can do so below! I’m really proud of what we did with it so I hope you all enjoy it :)
