My heroines part three: Sister Rosetta Tharpe

I’m back for another installment in my series about women who have inspired me, this time with the Godmother of rock ‘n’ roll herself - Sister Rosetta Tharpe!

For starters - if you are a fan of music, you owe this woman. She was originally a gospel singer who found success in the charts with her own takes on religious songs. Later on, she began to experiment more and more with different styles of guitar playing to create a swing sound which was actually a precursor to rock ‘n’ roll!

As we all know from the current news topics, black people have been sidelined and prejudiced for far too long. They are responsible for creating the roots of the music landscape as we know it today, and we need to keep remembering and talking about them.

In the words of Amanda Seales, “you cannot enjoy the rhythm and ignore the blues.” Black musicians should and must be respected and thanked for what they have done for our history.

And if you haven’t heard my latest song, ‘Trippin’ yet - you can watch the video below! Parts 2&3 coming soon!
