Hey guys! We’re a couple of weeks in quarantine now so I wanted to share with you some of my favourite books - because now that we’re all stuck at home you have plenty of time to read!
The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham
Be warned, this book is creepy! But it’s also about the apocalypse, so it’s pretty relevant… In this book, a man wakes up to find not only that the rest of the world, other than him, has gone blind while he was recovering from an operation in hospital, but that the world has been taken over by man-eating plants! It sounds wacky (and it is) but it’s also just super good. A really entertaining story, kind of topical, and especially good if you enjoy freaking yourself out a little bit! (I do!)
The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein
Don’t worry, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy is not nearly as intense as the actual thing! The Hobbit was written for kids so it’s much easier to get into, and it’s the perfect story to take you on an adventure, from the comfort of your own home! Tolkein is a master at work and this is the perfect introduction (also a lot less spooky than Day of the Triffids)
Great Goddesses by Nikita Gill
Wow, this is some of the best poetry I’ve read in a really long time! Nikita Gill takes well-known tales from Greek mythology and rewrites them with a feminist angle in this amazing collection of beautiful poetry. It’s such a good book to dip in and out of, and it’s the perfect pick-me-up for when those quarantine blues begin to get to you! (She has another book as well called Fierce Fairy Tales which is almost as good…)
The Girls by Emma Cline
If I were you, I’d save this book until the weather gets really warm, and then read it in the sunshine with a cool lemonade at your side. This is a book about the 60s with themes of gender, storytelling, relationships and more. It’s intriguing, mysterious and so well written that you won’t be able to put it down.
Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Vonnegut
This is one of my favourite books of all time! It’s a really weird story about time travel and aliens but also about war and death, but written in such a captivating and beautiful way! It’s really hard to convey just how bizarre and brilliant this book is, so you’ll just have to take my word for it… and if that didn’t convince you, it’s also really short so it’s a nice quick read!
