And the nominees are… My Brit Awards picks

The Brits have always been my favourite awards show. There’s something about them which fills me with pride at the amount of raw talent the British Isles produces. I’m so proud to count myself among them! In advance of my new music, coming soon, I had a good listen to all the nominees to get inspired - and here are my thoughts…

Male Solo Artist:

Wow, there’s a lot of talent in this category! Whilst I love Harry Styles (and I have since the days of One Direction), I think I have to back my guy Lewis Capaldi (I did a cover of his smash hit ‘Someone You Loved’ which you can watch below - do you think I did it justice?). He has just blown me away with all of his releases over the past year, and I really rate his social media presence - he’s so funny!

Female Solo Artist:

This is a hard one but I think I’m going to cross my fingers for FKA Twigs this year. She’s just secured a performance at the NME Awards as well as her second album last year surpassing her debut. She really intrigues me as an artist, refusing to be defined by any one genre and bringing her bizarre mixture of choral, witch-y soul to the mainstream must have been a difficult battle! I also love her dancing and could watch her for hours!

Best Group:

Foals is the clear winner in this category, if you ask me. Their latest album did so well, and I think it’s time Coldplay stepped down and let someone else dominate the music scene for once (as amazing as they are!) Foals are a fresh, new(ish) talent and they rock. Good luck guys!

Song of the Year:

Again, I think I have to support Lewis Capaldi here! ‘Someone You Loved’ was just the best song to put my own stamp on, and I loved exploring the emotions behind it, as well as feeling like I’d done the UK justice by covering an artist off our own terf! I also love Sam Smith and Normani’s song ‘Dancing with a Stranger’ and fully support Sam Smith in every stage of their career (and I would also be more than happy if they won!)

Mastercard Album of the Year:

Okay, so I can’t pick Lewis Capaldi for another category (although that’s not always an issue I guess, hmm @thegrammys…?) so I’ve branched out. And I can’t get over how stunning Kiwanuka is. Michael Kiwanuka just has the most incredible voice and that album was gorgeous from start to finish! It’s smooth, soulful, emotional, funky - so many amazing facets of it make me unbelievably happy! I love putting it on in the morning and letting his soulful vocals ease me into the day… We love you, Michael!

Best New Artist:

Okay, I know I said I wouldn’t do this, but name me someone who has transformed the world of pop more than Lewis Capaldi?! Who has single-handedly revolutionised the way we think about social media campaigns and brought about so much laughter and positivity to the music industry in so many ways? And that’s before you even get onto his music, which is amazing. Sorry guys, but he’s the only winner of this award for me.

International Artists:

I’m doing these two together because they’re at the end! Of the female artists, I would really love to see Lizzo win. She deserves the recognition for the insane year that she’s had, and for everything she represents - self love, self acceptance and body positivity, amongst so many other things. I think she should have won bigger at the Grammy’s too, so here’s hoping… I think Tyler the Creator deserves the male award here, for such a unique and interesting take on the genre of rap, especially since turning his attitude around to include more jazz and less homophobia! It’s always nice to see progress and I appreciate that he has recognised his mistakes - and is a better artist because of it.

Overall, I think whoever wins this year, we are in for a stellar awards ceremony honouring British talent! I can’t wait for performances from Lizzo, Dave, Billie Eilish, Celeste, Harry Styles and so many more on this star-studded night! Roll on next Tuesday!
