Get Gold with hidden cities

Through December Arts Award Voice has been running a theme selected by the Ikon Youth Programme, hidden cities. When I was in conversations with them over 2 months ago (wow time has flown) there were all sorts of ideas for a theme, food art being one. But this post isn't about what could have been, it's about what is.

Get Gold with hidden cities

I have always been a believer in not just taking opportunities, but creating them too. Hidden among your friends, among those around you, and among the city, town or village in which you may live will always be opportunities. These opportunities are not always apparent at first however I would encourage you to follow your heart and do what you love.

Gold Arts Award is all about taking your art and experiences to the next level and in my opinion at least, is about making yourself employable through contacts, skills and experiences. You may be surprised at how many organisations, big, small or newly formed might be just down the road in your area of interest. Some organisations may work a lot in one area but be run from another, they may focus their work on certain sections of the community or simply be so new or small that they get consumed in the mass market. Ever wanted to build a west end set? Curate some remarkable visual arts? Or shoot a short film? All such opportunities are available from small towns all over the country, don't just think you need to be in a big city.

So how can you find these organisations?

  1. Start by talking to people you do know in the sector of your interest. Personal knowledge is always the most reliable.
  2. You can try searching google for the relevant words and names of local places.
  3. Also try business or creative support agencies and buildings in your local area too. Call them or take a look at their website.
  4. Try searching the Arts Award Supporter map too because there's an ever growing number of useful organisations

So the big message as we enter a new year is, find and create opportunities and don't let the cities hide them away from making your dreams and ideas a reality.
