The Celebration Of Birthdays Throughout Different Cultures And Countries

As it is coming up to my very own birthday, I thought I’d explore the tradition of birthdays and how different cultures celebrate them throughout our diverse array of countries that inhabit the world. For me, growing up and travelling the world due to my parents hectic careers whilst simultaneously being born into a heritage of Italian descent, I have had the opportunity to explore what birthdays truly mean to different cultures. In Italy, we follow the ways of America and British cultures. However. when it comes to the cake, the presents and the parities the celebrant has to pick and pay for the cake, the family bring gifts in abundance and the parties are often spent on the down low, at home surrounded by friends and family.

In UK and US style, birthdays are an all-out occasion to celebrate the birth date and the turning of being another year older. From cards to cake and presents to parties throughout Britain and America, birthdays are a given tradition in this culture no matter if you are hitting the big 50 or are marking the very first year of your life.

Throughout the rest of the world, the most impressive birthday traditions go to Australia, Jamaica and the strange routine the Argentinians have on birthdays. In both Aus and Jamaica, birthdays are heavily food orientated in many different ways. Whilst Australians often eat fairy bread, with this delight being a slice of buttered bread topped with colourful sprinkles, it seems the Jamaicans do not consume their food yet they throw a handful of flour at the birthday boy or girl. On the other hand, in Argentina it can be considered tradition to pull the ear of the person celebrating being another year older, how many times this may be are totally dependant upon the age.

It seems big birthday bashes can be celebrated in a plethora of ways throughout cultures and countries, simply too many too list off. I for one shall be enjoying some traditional delights such as cake when my birthday soon rolls around.
