Exclusive Interview with President Street

Riding high after a run of UK performances, we caught up with Pete, the man at the helm of Australian Pop Collective President Street, to talk about their recent English adventure, and who their musical inspirations are.

Exclusive Interview with President Street

Hi President Street! So, you were just touring in England (I actually caught your performance at The Griff Inn in East London!), can you tell us a little bit about your trip?

Hi! thank you for coming down, great to have had you with us at the Griff Inn. Yeah we had a great time traveling around England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 doing some great radio spots to promote our new single, “Can’t Go On” and also playing a bunch of acoustic gigs around universities across the country as part of the Coffee House Sessions tour.

What was your standout gig from the tour and why?

Oh there were so many, but as a collective we’d probably have to agree on the Camden Market gig. London and Camden Market have such a great vibe and we had a lot of friends come to see us and we just loved the buzz of the market.

Where was your favourite place that you visited whilst you were here?

Again, so many - but for all of us probably Newcastle - we were so surprised by how cool it was. The architecture was beautiful and the people were so friendly and happy. We had a great night out and serendipitously met Sarah, who’s representing Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest and she was gorgeous and super fun.

Did you discover anything new about English people whilst you were here…?!

Not much as we are pretty familiar with the Brits but we were surprised by how many people mentioned to us that they were so scared of snakes and spiders as soon as we mentioned we were from Australia!

What was your favourite song to perform and why?

Gav -gotta move on
Pete - Can’t Go On, the new single
Ruby - Yeah I Know and Can’t Go On
The acoustic arrangements are so different from our studio versions that each of us really enjoy the different vibe of the acoustic arrangements.

Can you give us any hints about what you’re getting up to in 2019…?

More songs on the go - more touring and meeting more wonderful people through our travels. Another trip to England is definitely in our sights.

Who are you biggest musical inspirations?

Actually very varied between all of us in the band right from pop to rnb to rock to heavy metal across all eras!

Can you tell us about your song writing process? What comes first, the lyrics or the melody?

It varies - sometimes music, sometimes melody, sometimes lyrics! The main driver is normally the overall emotion and feeling behind the song. We try and explore that as organically as we can but each song starts however it starts and we roll with that.

If you could duet with any musician / band (dead or alive) who would it be and why?

Maybe Prince - so incredibly talented and musical style is so diverse and we love how his live arrangements are so different to his studio arrangements so we think we’d have some fun playing with him!
