In conversation with Jamie Hannah

Singer-songwriter Jamie Hannah has been making waves, and amassing some influential fans, with his soulful and laidback tunes. He spent 2018 in the studio with the likes of Boy George and Benny D and is now ready to show the world exactly the kind of musician that he is. We caught up with him to talk about what we can expect from him in the future, and how it’s been to work with some of the industries biggest tastemakers

So for those new to your sound… Can you tell us a bit about your new single ‘Sound of My Youth’?

I would categorise Sound of My Youth into the trap pop genre, with strong influences from Classical composers inc. Handel and Monteverdi. So quite the juxtaposition!

‘Sound of my Youth’ seems to capture the nostalgia that we all feel when reminiscing about an old relationship / love – what inspired you to write a song about this feeling?

Exactly that.  You look back on your first love and the powerful memories it evokes.  First love particularly takes you breath away as it possess you and fills up all your emotions.  It is very poignant when such a relationship ends.  Memories are both happy and sad but can still be overwhelming.

What was the recording process like? Did you know what you wanted or was the end product more collaborative?

‘Sound of My Youth’ was the first track I recorded in a studio.  The recording process was collaborative, working on the track with Benny D and a top liner. As soon as I got started with the vocals it all came relatively quickly, adding 3 part harmonies, and even me whipping my saxophone out!

2018 saw you begin to work with Boy George, what was it like to be producing with him?

George is such an icon.  He is a great mentor and so generous with his time. It was incredibly surreal working on a number of tracks with him. I cant wait to release some of the music we’ve worked on together.

You have been coined ‘Benny D’s protégé’… How has it been to work and learn with him?

Benny D is an amazing producer.  He has a wealth of experience.  He has taught me so many skills of the trade and it is a pleasure to work with him.  He says he thinks of me as another son!

Are we going to be able to see you live anytime soon….?

So many things coming up – I will confirm soon but private gigs, festivals and a support tour are being booked as we speak.

What can expect from your forthcoming releases?

My next release is a collaboration with Boy George and Benny D.  It is to be released in the next month or so. Further down the line this year an EP - the tracks are ready to go.

And finally…. Whose music can you not stop listening to at the moment?

Freya Ridings. Her voice is ethereal yet has such a powerful tone, and the narrative she portrays when she performs always gets me teary. It’s absolutely stunning.

Listen to Jamie Hannah’s new single ‘Sound of My Youth’ below, and stay tuned to see what this talented multi-instrumentalist gets up to next...
