While EGX is predominantly a gaming convention, I came across something within the vast hall that I wouldn't quite class as a game, but more of an interactive experience: Theatre VR.
The concept is quite ingenious and I'm surprised I haven't come across it already.
You put on the VR headset, and then load up the 'game'. From there, you select a play and the role you want to take. The game will then feed you your lines and guide you around the stage - and even prompt you to move your hands to really emphasise a line. There is also sword fighting - because all the best plays have life-and-death action!
Admittedly there wasn't an awful lot to see at this point - the game was only six months into development - but the foundations were there and perhaps more importantly, it sparked my interest as to the opportunities the technology could create.
For example, if you live in quite a remote area but really have a passion for theatre, you are no longer out of luck, or required to drive for an hour to the nearest city. Instead, if you have a virtual reality headset you could be transported to the works of Shakespeare via the computer.Obviously it won't ever match the real experience, but in terms of opening up opportunities, I think it is a fantastic idea.
Speaking to the representative at EGX, he explained that Theatre VR is not yet available for download due to it being so early in its development cycle. He also explained how they hope to make it a shared experience, so you and your friends can all jump into Theatre VR together, acting out a play together or even going to a virtual theatre to watch someone else perform.
What do you think? Is this something that would ever interest you, and do you see it ever replacing the Globe Theatre? Let me know!
