UNIT 2: Part C&D - First Plans for Film/Script Ideas for 10 Shot Film

This post shows the development of the beginning stages of my final 10 shot film project.

My final project for Unit 2  will be a one boy show, rework of Shakespeare's play the Tempest, using all the skills learnt in my online Young Academy Film Course. In the course there was a section on the history of film and types of films. This included a screening of Charlie Chaplin silent film, called The Kid. I decided this would be the best way to approach my own film. To make it silent and create more of a drama using movements, gestures and props to recreate my version. I sat down with my mum and we looked at how we could reduce the text using the 10 shot summary required in the Young Film Academy Course.

Using the guidelines from the Young Film Academy course we chose from 5 classic storylines and I decided the Tempest fitted into one based around getting revenge. We also looked at the characters I would have to play and decide on the main ones to focus on in the final film - Prospero, Mianda, Aeriel, Caliban, King Alonso, Sebastian, Ferdinand, Trnculo and Stephano. We talked about using props including wigs, sock puppets and shadow puppets to help show each character in the performance.

My notes from these discussions are included in this blog post.

We decided the last speech of the play when Prospero gives up his magic would be the best one to focus on and involve other actors. We thought dfferent voices for some of the lines to emphasise the importance of the speech.

The next task in my Young Film Academy course, is to figure out what each shot will be, using our summary of the play and knowledge of the characters in it. The Young Film Academy have provided a template for me to do this, as part of their 10 shot challenge.
