‘Who is this creature who gradually emerges out from within?’
Known for their iconic performances and long-standing artist residency at The Royal Vauxhall Tavern’s Bar Wotever, notorious V.I.P (visually impaired person) cabaret artist and dance maker Ebony Rose Dark is set to welcome in a brand new season of performance work focused on ‘new voices’ at London’s iconic The Place with their show Out There, In Here – running for one night only on September 10, 7:30pm.
A hub for dance as an art form, The Place remains the thriving hub of innovation and creativity that it was when it first opened its doors in 1969, as London Contemporary Dance School (LCDS) and a home for London Contemporary Dance Theatre (LCDT 1967-1994).
Ebony Rose Dark is known for their performances around Disability, Ableism, racism, and relationships within the LGBTQ+ community particularly through The Royal Vauxhall Tavern and Bar Wotever – where Ebony first emerged. Alongside renowned performances at various UK Prides, Hoopla, Marlborough Pub & Theatre and regularly with David Hoyle, Ebony has been focussing on accessible Cabaret for LGBTQ+ Visually impaired people. They have been an integral part of Brownton Abbey; Cripping the Arts Symposium, Toronto; Unlimited, London; Queering the Crip / Cripping the Queer, Berlin.
A 55 minute fully audio-described performance (live and recorded) with BSL interpretation and Ebony Rose Dark’s first full length work, Out There, In Here will take audiences on a journey through the senses and what it means to lose a sense as an individual. Set in a unique Galleon ship-shaped stage, Ebony Rose Dark will bring to life a swirling story of what it is to be seen and not seen with beautiful costume, colour, and wings.
Challenging ideas of what visual impairment ‘should’ or ‘shouldn’t’ look like, Out There, In Here pushes back against the age-old trend of putting people in boxes with an infectious joy and confidence unique to Ebony Rose Dark’s glamorous performance style. Having always centred the queer disabled experience, audio description is present throughout Out There, In Here. This work culminates in a spectacular explosion of Ebony’s glamorous world that glitters.
‘Out There, In Here’ comes to The Place for one night only this September 10th at 7:30pm. The performance has BSL interpretation from Ali Gordon.
