"The performance from Jamal Sterrett Phoenix combined with the melancholic instrumentals and a rhythmic beat scoring the vibrant backing visuals gives this piece a feeling of reminiscing on the culture that brought it to be. Every aspect is designed to highlight the history of Hip-hop and relish in it, finding the essence of Hip-hop and including the audience in a way that feels nostalgic and warm."

"I love the way Casey uses light and editing to create a complex visual feel out of a very simple concept. It really feels like being taken on a journey through the cultural history of hip-hop via the twin perspectives of both a talented dancer and a talented filmmaker. That journey into the hip-hop community comes through pure immersion in the music, the dance, and the art as a whole."

I'm a social entrepreneur and multimedia artist working across film, music, visual arts, installations and spoken word. I am also the founder and creative director of Mad Truth an arts organisation centered around the power of creative expression for improving mental health and promoting personal growth. The idea being - we can use creative expression as a remarkable tool for re-framing tragedy, trauma and mental ill-health in a way where these things no longer keep us from becoming our best selves but instead they can become a source of beauty, strength and resilience.

What attracted you to the artform? Was there a particular inspiration?

I've been working in moving image for as long as I can remember. A common theme that keeps emerging in my work is the correlation or contrast between the foreground and background. It's important to me that each part of the film or image tells it's own story. Much in the same way a painter might use layers to create depth in a painting.

How did you learn to do this artform? Were there any challenges?

Filmmaking is extremely rewarding yet highly complex work. There are so many moving parts from logistics, to directing to producing and editing. It is a highly engaging and aesthetically fascinating medium to work in.

What is a tip that you would give to somebody else looking to get started in this artform?

Don't be worried about making a masterpiece straight away. Just try and feel it out, regardless of your external circumstances you should be clear and concise with your intention. If that intention is strong enough and maintained with focus and discipline everything else will fall into place.

Is this something you think you will continue to do?

Yes
