A relatively new recording artist, Kavo is a young upcoming rapper that could very well be the new sensation who could breathe youthful life into the UK’s drill scene. The musician only started releasing music back in March last year, and within that short amount of time has amassed quite a respectable following, reaching over 2.5 million streams since starting out.
Kavo made a splash from his first release, ‘Billy X Pain’, which has gained tremendous traction, now sitting at around 1 million views on YouTube. The song saw radio plays on reputable stations such as BBC Radio 1, and support from heavyweights within the UK rap scene such as Skepta, Chip, D Double E and even a nod from footballer Raheem Sterling. His following tracks, ‘F GCSE’s X Truth’ and ‘Lean’ have also seen large numbers of listeners. Despite the pandemic, Kavo has also managed to hit the stage a few times, supporting both D Double E and Da Beatfreakz.
The rapper’s newest single, titled ‘AIRFORCE ONE’, was released last week, and sees him in collaboration with one of the UK’s largest grime veterans, RA. The song highlights the old school ushering in the new, as the musicians team up on a lyrically dense track that expertly injects energy and a new, exciting and cheeky flavour into the familiar drill sound that we are all acquainted with.
RA being involved in the project is sure to help bolster Kavo’s career, due to his loyal fanbase and 20 years experience in the scene. The fact that the veteran has taken young Kavo under his wing is an incredibly intriguing prospect, the young artist has obviously impressed the old heads, and the collaboration sees Kavo holding a torch for the next generation of drill rappers to come. RA bringing over his loyal fanbase to highlight a newer artist is a wonderful thing to see, and will surely reinforce predictions that Kavo is certainly one to watch over the coming year.
The music video for ‘AIRFORCE ONE’ is available to watch on YouTube now, and is a well shot one at that. Musically, the track’s beat selection is impressive, and his lyrical capability is just as adept, especially considering the rapper’s young age. The repeated refrains within the track get ingrained into the skull, with verses full of spritely energy and clever phrasing, keeping that classic drill vibe but elevating it into a newer, more unique style. RA’s feature is just as punchy, adding a grit and experience to the song, as well as a bit of old-school colour.
Kavo is definitely an artist to look out for this year, and if ‘AIRFORCE ONE’ is telling us anything, it's that this young man has a lot to say, and is improving at a remarkably rapid rate.
